wardrobe workhorses.

I tend to be all about the classics when it comes to my closet. Instead of getting caught up in the trends I prefer to keep it simple and stock my wardrobe with pieces that are super versatile yet will never go out of style. It’s all about the mix and match, my friends!

Two perfect examples of this: a chambray tunic and striped pencil skirt I recently grabbed at Target (while there to pick up milk, I may add. Using Target for your grocery shopping is dangerous!)

Chambray is always a good idea because it can be easily dressed up or down and I was super excited to get my hands on this piece because it’s incredibly soft, a nice medium shade of chambray (not too dark, not too light, just riiiiiight) AND it’s a great tunic length. And this striped skirt? Sold. You guys already know that I can’t resist stripes – this piece has just the right amount of stretch so it’s ultra comfortable while still looking dressy.

So let’s put these two wardrobe workhorses to the test, shall we?

We’ll start with the basics – these two pair nicely together with the tunic top tucked into the skirt. I think the casual vibes of the chambray help dress down the pencil skirt to make it more outside of the office friendly. Pair with a sandal and some simple accessories and you’re good to go.

The chambray tunic easily transitions into weekend casual mode when paired with a pair of black leggings (it’s long enough to cover your bum so you’re free to go on and wear leggings as pants!), some slip on sneakers and a leather tote. This is one of my favorite combinations for running weekend errands because it’s ultra comfortable and easy yet still looks pulled together enough to prevent getting the side eye from strangers.

Meanwhile the skirt can easily be dressed up for client meetings or date night by keeping things monochromatic and wearing with a black silk tank, a leather jacket and a pair of black pumps. A bold lip color does just the trick to break up the black and add a pop of color to the look.

Are you all about making your closet work hard by mixing and matching? What are some of your favorite wardrobe workhorses?
